Energizing, Emotional, Engaging: The Place After This One Album Review

THE PLACE AFTER THIS ONE

Release date: March 28, 2025

Rating: 4.5/5

Underoath’s newest album delivers 12 tracks packed full of energizing riffs, emotional lyrics, and engaging songwriting. The Place After This One is a powerfully curated experience that was well worth the wait.

The music video for “All The Love Is Gone” encapsulates this hard hitting blend of emotions from their lyrics perfectly as they allude to isolation, hopelessness, and other sensitive topics. The intro monologue, the wonderfully placed camera angles, and contrasting bright lights with the dark scenery throughout perfectly highlights the intensity of the song. From the ambient intro to the unapologetic breakdown, the emotion shown by the characters is clear as it builds up to the climactic final chorus of the song.

There were a lot of standouts on this album. I loved the lead tone with the guitar on “Spinning In Place.” “Teeth” and “Shame” both used inventive approaches with their use of synth driven melodies to build on its catchy song structures, and I really enjoyed listening to how Underoath uses this kind of songwriting in a way that makes their storytelling flow. As mentioned before, these songs deliver breakdowns that simply hit the spot. I have no doubt that the pit for their concerts would be nothing short of a great time.

In a lot of ways, this album reminds me of the metal albums from groups I loved growing up. The song that truly hit differently for me was the third track, “Loss.” The sound evokes a feeling of nostalgia that reminds me exactly of what inspired me to tune my guitar below drop C for the first time. It's a reminder to me that the right sound can give more meaning to what words alone can’t overstate. Putting it all together made for an exhilarating listen, one that I definitely look forward to revisiting after its release.

With the highly anticipated release of this album amid their tour, I can only assume that these songs will have some appearances and make for some incredible performances. It's no question that many people will feel seen from the messages from these songs, and inspired by their sound. Underoath truly demonstrates that putting it all together this way can make all the difference.
