New Music Friday 4/19/24

Welcome back to our weekly NMF roundup. Here’s what we think you should be listening to this week!

Shag Chateau - Good Boy Daisy

IYL: The Wrecks, The Haunt, CARR

2 Girls 1 Alt Rock Band

OPEN FOR BUSINESS - ANGUS1

IYL: Mark Harding, Guy Burns, Chenso

Words by Shahzaib Hussain: “Upon hearing the Australian artist for the first time in 2021, I was drawn to the way he approached both feeling and movement in songs that recontextualised guitar-led electronic music. Angus1 is a conceptualist and a studied composer. His sampled devotionals run the gamut between daytime disco, French touch, melodic pop and moody minimalism. He transmutes a deep, reverent knowledge of dance music lore with a deftness of touch.”

another woman - Coral Moons

IYL: Hope & Things, Gentle Temper, Slow Dress

Coral Moons is an indie pop band that formed on the shores of Boston and recently relocated to the woods of Upstate New York. If they’re not tending to their gardens, taking film photos with vintage cameras, or drinking homemade wine by the fire, they’re touring nationally and hitting up major music festivals on the way. The solitude and stillness of the cabin have had an immersive impact on lead singer and songwriter, Carly Kraft (she/her). She describes a week at their home studio in the woods, caring for her chickens, as a healing experience. Seeking refuge to heal old wounds, moving to the countryside has forced her to slow down and reclaim what was always hers — her songs.

Change Your Mind - KNOX

IYL: Arrows in Action, Braden Bales, dreamfone

Growing up, Knox knew he had an interest in music more than the average kid. His teenage years were sound tracked by artists such as Fall Out Boy & Ed Sheeran, and the summer before he started college, Knox taught himself guitar. He began playing open mic nights and by his sophomore year, his musical ambitions were so all-consuming that he dropped out of school, moved in with his grandma and saved up money to move to Nashville. He made the leap in January 2019. Knox used Covid isolation to work on his craft. The focus paid off: Knox signed a publishing deal in 2022 but was struck with the urge to record songs he had been working on. The result was How to Lose a Girl in 7 Songs, Knox’s debut EP, released February 2023. Knox filmed TikToks featuring his song “Sneakers”, and 1 amassed nearly 2M views overnight. “Sneakers” now has over 28M streams. Another fan favorite track, “Not The 1975," can be seen on the Top 40 and Hot AC radio charts, and is featured on Knox’s latest EP, “I’m So Good At Being Alone?” released October 2023. Knox has since been touring, opening for the Band Camino, Nightly, and Boys Like Girls and most recently performing on his own sold out headline tour. “I'm 6 states away from home and there’s a thousand people in the audience that are singing the song that I wrote with my friends in my bedroom. That's when it gets you, when you see people connecting to something that I made with my best friends. It’s the most unreal feeling in the world.”

in loving - Sophie Holohan

IYL: Isabel Pless, Abby Cates, Tommy Lefroy

what can I say, I like to overthink and overshare :’)

The 502s - The 502s

IYL: Oliver Hazard, Daniel Nunnelee, Caamp

Aureate Astronomies - Fairything

IYL: Thawney, CHERRY!, Emma Freeman

The gender weird dyke of your daydreams, making music to watch the sky too, be it for clouds or constellations! Alex K. Masse, AKA Fairything, is a synthy, sapphic, singer-songwriter solo act (and probable changeling). Music is a longtime love of theirs, and their self-released debut EP, A Year, Moonbound, reveled in a modest success that caught the eye of many future collaborators. Since then, Alex has been everywhere from Broadway Records crossovers to online multimedia collectives, from Vancouver Pride to working with the incomparable Penelope Scott. They're also a member of Webpage 505, twice-featured on genre-bending digital art collective Goop House. Much of their musical inspiration comes from In Love With A Ghost, The Scary Jokes, Tikkle Me, and the video games & cartoons they grew up on. These influences shine through in their unique melodies, poetic lyricism, and the dreamy, synthy sounds of their Suzuki Omnichord. They also compose and produce freelance for a variety of mediums, including podcasts, video games, and short films. When not making music, Alex is probably writing, working on their Communication degree, or spreading magic in the local arts scene. They’re also a neurodivergent nonbinary lesbian, which greatly affects their process.

M.H.D. - Midheaven

IYL: little luna, FEELSGOOD, Sierra Deaton

dreampop girlfriend / shoegaze boyfriend

I Won't Hold My Breath - Thesaurus Rex

IYL: Calvin Rezen, Deerist, Henny the Artist

Thesaurus Rex is the Brooklyn-based indie rock band that actually invented indie-rock in 2022 shortly after waking up from a chicken-parm induced food-coma. Since then they have influenced such iconic acts as Vampire Weekend, Weezer, and your mom.

never could've broke it - Comfort Club

IYL: seth arlan, healer, Palmer

Los Angeles-based Comfort Club is an indie pop artist, channeling honesty in gut-wrenching lyricism that takes every listener on a journey through love and heartbreak, forging a community out of his lonely moments. Sonically, he epitomizes dream pop with silky guitar and effervescent melodies, emulating his favorite artists like John Mayer. Comfort Club is a completely DIY project, collaborating with undeniable rising stars like Ritt Momney and Christian French. His catalog collected over 3.5 Million streams and counting, while also landing him on Spotify playlists like “Indie Pop” and “Undercurrents” as well as earning him a spot in the Fresh Finds Class of 2021, further proving he is truly an artist to watch in years to come.

Alex is inspired by a diverse range of artists spanning from the likes of The 1975 to 5 Seconds of Summer, and solo acts like Harry Styles and even Michael Jackson. Alex's signature electric guitar-driven anthemic pop sound has grabbed the attention of teenagers and young adults worldwide. His recent single ‘I Hate Your Friends’ hit 1 million streams in the first 3 weeks and has continued to rise due to its TikTok virality. Alex is excited to continue releasing music in 2024 that makes his fans want to jump around and scream the lyrics!
