Back to the Drawing Board - New Rules

IYL: Daniel Seavey, Will Linley, Alex Sampson

For New Rules, three guitars and three voices converge upon one stadium-size sound. The London-based trio—Alec McGarry, Nathan Lambert, and Ryan Meaney—elevate pop to the rafters fueled by singer-songwriter soul, rock ‘n’ roll spirit, and a whole lot of personality. With Ryan from Ireland, Alec from Hertfordshire, and Nathan from Chelmsford, the boys initially met online, bonding over similar backgrounds playing music on street corners, uploading covers online, and penning original material. The musicians congregated in London and introduced New Rules with “Call It” and “Fix Somebody” in 2019. Beyond hitting the road with Julia Michaels, Little Mix, and Picture This, they’ve sold out successive headline tours. Following the viral success of “Pasta” and “Emily,” they caught the attention of Elektra Records and signed to the label in 2021. In the summer of 2022, the trio released their debut mixtape Go The Distance, which racked up praise from PEOPLE Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone UK, and more, in addition to selling out UK shows and their first-ever U.S. dates earlier this year.

breaking the fourth wall - Allison Ponthier

IYL: Trousdale, Frankie Lou, Charli Adams

The Texas-born Allison Ponthier creates soul-searching songs with the intimacy of a journal entry and unbridled imagination of a movie. Hailed by Billboard as “an artist with seemingly unlimited potential,” the singer/songwriter broke through with ‘Faking My Own Death.’ The 2021 EP documented her coming-out story with a dreamy fusion of indie-folk, alt-rock, and left-of-center country-pop. The standout, “Cowboy,” was featured on Billboard’s list of the “25 Best Songs by LGBTQ Artists of 2021 (so far).” The Brooklyn-based artist also teamed up with Lord Huron for hit single “I Lied,” joining them on the road + for her late night debut on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.” 2022 saw Ponthier’s sophomore EP ‘Shaking Hands with Elvis’ earn raves from the likes of Consequence Of Sound, who compared the project to “the dynamic folk-tinged stoicism of Kacey Musgraves and Orville Peck”. Since signing with Interscope, she’s toured with Muna, Bleachers, Holly Humberstone, Hayley Kiyoko, and appeared at festivals like Bottlerock, Austin City Limits, and Summerfest. Ponthier’s music + creative vision has been touted by Vogue, Rolling Stone, NPR, NME, Fader, V magazine and more.

GABBAREIN - GABBAREIN

IYL: Christopher Bono, IANAI, Kveld

Ethereal Nordic folk duo Gabbarein was born from the friendship and respect between Norwegian vocalist & sound healer Cecilie Hafstad and American composer & producer Christopher Bono (Ghost Against Ghost, Nous Alpha, NOUS). Christopher's deep admiration for Cecilie's voice, sparked by recording her vocals for Ghost Against Ghost’s track "still love," became the catalyst for Gabbarein's creation. Their collaboration took root within the surreal landscape of Norway's Arctic Circle, where they set up a temporary recording studio in a rented house on the water's edge in Lyngen. Surrounded by awe-inspiring fjords and the mystical presence of a white reindeer ('Gabbarein, in Sámi language), the duo immersed themselves in an improvisational creative process. Nothing was pre-written, Cecilie channeled all the lyrics and sang in Norwegian for the first time, capturing raw and authentic emotions. 13 tracks were completed from this fertile setting. The album is built on emotive vocals framed by sensitive, sparse textures and arrangements with a variety of instrumentation including synths, mandolin, kalimba, guitars, flute, violin, percussion, and nature samples. Most of the tracks have a calming and transcendent aura, while some channel an ancient Scandinavian intensity through pounding rhythms and indigenous melodies.

Sad In Carolina - Dexter and the Moonrocks

IYL: eternal sunshine, Liam St. John, Giovannie and the Hired Guns

Hailing from Abilene, Texas, Dexter and The Moonrocks deliver a unique Southern Alternative fusion lovingly dubbed “Western Space Grunge” by their fans. After massive success with the hit single, the band released their self-titled EP featuring a number of hits like “Where I Steer” or “Behave” and received overwhelmingly positive responses. Lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist James Tuffs, lead guitarist/vocal harmonizer Ryan Anderson, bassist Ty Anderson, and drummer/vocal harmonizer Fox, draw on their favorite elements of bands like Nirvana, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and Whiskey Myers in order to create the unique sound that can only be described as “Western Space Grunge”.

His vulnerable lyrics sparked a profound connection with millions worldwide (and notable mentions from David Kushner, Clinton Kane, Lauv, RÜFÜS DU SOL) following the release of his viral debut i think you loved me in early 2023. Noah is building a catalogue that goes beyond just the music. His single floorboards. explores the tension of nostalgia, that beauty & pain often come from the same source, the same person. Having taken 10 months to complete, floorboards. showcases Noah’s commitment to capturing moments in their most honest form. In collaboration with Tomorrowland, the world’s biggest electronic music festival, Noah released his track Learning To Love with Beatport’s top Brazilian DJ’s Antdot & Maz (BR) in fall of 2023. His latest song tired of healing. has organically grown into an anthem on TikTok for those feeling exhausted with heartache, & the non-linear process that true healing comes with. Noah is closing out the year with another crushing, yet empowering release that will leave you in hopeful tears. Consider it free therapy. <3

Yesman - Remy Reilly

IYL: Frankie Leonie, The Dirty Shirts, Bayleigh Cheek

“I wrote these songs after seeing other people’s relationships and watching movies,” Reilly says. “As a songwriter I put myself in other people’s shoes. I’m telling stories.” Reilly has a style and sound that seems more mature than many artists twice as old. She’s always been singing, and started playing drums at 11. She says she wrote songs on piano first. Guitar came later. Her songwriting is thoughtful; Reilly explains that “26” is an anti-bullying song. Producer Jason Burt, who helped record her EP, says Reilly completed her powerful vocals on “26” in just two takes. He compares her voice to artists like Norah Jones, Feist, and St. Vincent.“She’s 14, dude,” “That’s insanity. Where is she going to be in a year or two? Remy’s a better songwriter than some of the 30-year-old artists I’ve worked with.” Burt says. “As a producer, you don’t know how people will perform in the studio. But hearing her sing on an expensive microphone for the first time was mind-blowing. She has mad range.” Producers simplified the complex rhythms of Reilly’s piano-driven demos in favor of using her “next-level melodies” to pursue a pop format with a soul and blues vibe. “She’s going to be a fantastic musician who will do whatever she wants,” Burt says. “I see her being that musician onstage who plays every instrument and gives epic speeches on humanitarianism, life, and politics in between songs. Remy’s a badass kid.”

god needs the devil - Jonah Kagen

IYL: Henrik, Vincent Lima, Hazlett

23-year-old singer and songwriter, Jonah Kagen, grew up in Savannah, Georgia. He took up guitar at the age of six, diving deep into the instrument’s technical aspects after his musician grandfather showed him performance videos. He further found inspiration in the music of guitarist Andy McKee, whose finger-style technique lit a creative fire within. “He opened my eyes to what an acoustic guitar could be,” he recalls, as he dove deeper into creating music on his own. “If you can bring somebody something with your music that they can’t get anywhere else, there’s nothing better than that.” Jonah’s debut EP, ‘georgia got colder,’ was released in December 2022 on Arista Records. He’s already cut impressive figures with over 140M+ global streams, a US tour supporting Maisie Peters, ~2 million Spotify monthly listeners, and was included on Shazam’s 2023 predictions list. An exciting new voice bringing undeniable energy and sincerity through his multifaceted sound, he is undoubtedly on the rise.
