Right - Solon

IYL: False Teeth, Honeyland, Don Stroganoff

Her eyes fill up with tears again and she closes them. Even in memory she will find this moment unbearably intense, and she's aware of this now, while it's happening. She has never believed herself fit to be loved by any person. But now she has a new life, of which this is the first moment, and even after many years have passed she will still think: Yes, that was it, the beginning of my life.

Eels - Being Dead

IYL: Zero Percent APR, Big Bill, Gus Baldwin

Being Dead: America's #1 sweethearts. With their distinct blend of catchy yet unpredictable songwriting, undeniable harmonies, and unbridled spirit, Falcon Bitch and Gumball dole out boo-boos whilst also kissing them better.

Aside from musical achievements, the two took home first place at the 2015 Golden Road Haunted Wine Run 5K Vineyard Stomp in Surry County, NC. The win prompted them to buckle down and train for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where they swept the competition, returning with 5 medals and the respect of a nation. Inspired by the incredible flavors of their travels, they took to the kitchen for what was their most sensational project to date: their signature restaurant La Piss Tarte in 2017. 2 Michelin stars and a Pulitzer prize later, the duo find themselves sitting atop a mountain of wealth generously donated to a charity of your choice.

But don’t be fooled! Though they are extremely benevolent, they do withhold a small portion of their fortune to indulge in their true passion: American legacy muscle car restoration. Can you blame them? ‘Muscle cars’ redefined performance driving in the mid 20th century and is a term that was coined in 1966 to describe a group of American-made, two-door sports coupes with powerful engines. Here to stoke the coals and resurrect the legacy is Being Dead whose passion roars incessantly – not unlike a Chrysler second-generation Hemi. (When the 426 Hemi landed on the scene in 1964, it shook up the competition.)

Queen of the Clouds: X - Tove Lo

IYL: Charlie XCX, BANKS, Kiiara

Award-winning performer and Grammy-nominated songwriter Tove Lo crafts raw, confessional pop shaped by her love of grunge and the pristine sounds of her Swedish homeland. The way her 2013 single "Habits (Stay High)" swung between joy and despair and frankly depicted drug use and sex made it a distinctive, relatable, multi-platinum hit and a fitting introduction to her uncensored style. She followed it with more uninhibited, confessional music: Her 2014 debut album, Queen of the Clouds, and 2017's BLUE LIPS upheld her reputation for confronting the darker side of love and relationships with thoughtful, provocative, and catchy songwriting. On 2019's Sunshine Kitty, she took a slightly more lighthearted approach without losing any of her edge, while 2022's Dirt Femme lended nuance to her concept of femininity.

Big Dreams - Amyl and the Sniffers

IYL: The Chats, Viagra Boys, STIFF RICHARDS

In the eight years since Amyl and The Sniffers came together in Melbourne’s sticky pub-rock scene, Amyl and the Sniffers have become masters of balancing power and playfulness. With two critically acclaimed albums under their belt - 2019’s self-titled debut and 2021’s visceral ‘Comfort To Me’ - vocalist Amy Taylor, guitarist Declan Mehrtens, bassist Gus Romer and drummer Bryce Wilson have achieved something unique and remarkable.

Since the release of Comfort to Me, the band has seen their horizons broaden exponentially in every way. And it’s this attitude - bigger, brighter, smarter, sharper - that’s fuelling their third album, ‘Cartoon Darkness’. Recorded with producer Nick Launay at Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Los Angeles, on the same desk that captured Nirvana’s Nevermind and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, the latest Amyl offering is full of surprises. Musically, Mehrtens, Romer and Wilson have written The Sniffers’ most diverse album yet. It stretches from classic punk to the glammy strut of recent single ‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ to the stormy balladry of ‘Big Dreams’ and beyond. "Cartoon Darkness is driving head first into the unknown, into this looming sketch of the future that feels terrible, but doesn’t even exist yet. A childlike darkness," says Amy Taylor. "I don’t want to meet the devil half-way and mourn what we have right now. The future is cartoon, the prescription is dark, but it's novelty. It's just a joke. It's fun."

Mountain Music - Nina Nesbitt

IYL: Gabrielle Aplin, Lauren Aquilina, shy martin

Dear wanderer, 'Mountain Music' is yours now ⛰️⛰️

This album is for the girl who grew up in the small town, the twenty-something trying to find her way in the big city and the person I am now looking back at the view of it all. The beauty, the magic, the messiness and everything in-between. Mountain Music held my hand through some of my hardest moments and I really hope it can hold yours too.

Rat Race - Towa Bird

IYL: MUNA, Renee Rapp, boygenius

Since taking up electric guitar at the age of 12, Towa Bird has come to rely on her chosen instrument as something of a second voice – an immediate vessel for raw self-expression, often manifested in the form of frenetic yet sublimely executed guitar solos. Now 23 years old, the Hong Kong-born, half-Filipino, half-English singer/songwriter is ready to unleash her own original music unto the world. She says of the music - “I grew up listening to so many male-gazey love songs, and it was important to put something out into the world that felt like the music I wanted for myself when I was a kid.” She’s able to do just that with her sweetly crafted sound – one that strikes a rare balance of boldness with sensitivity, and is both wildly explosive while sharing a tender exploration of queerness, identity, and the complexities of love.

Feeling Not Found - Origami Angel

IYL: Micahel Cera Palin, Macseal, Charmer

Feeling Not Found, the third full-length album from Washington, D.C. duo Origami Angel, defines a moment and sound within the punk and emo communities. Vocalist/guitarist Ryland Heagy and drummer Pat Doherty, who started the band in 2016, created this 14-track epic with producer Will Yip at Studio 4 Recording. The album explores a sensation of being lost in digital information, reflecting Heagy’s view of America as a “digital silicon hellscape.” Heagy explains that the album represents his and the band’s emotional journey over three years, culminating in a mix of easycore, metalcore, indie rock, emo, and electronic genres that showcase their unrestrained creativity.

The juxtaposition of the band’s rise in notoriety with the pandemic’s shift to online-only existence deeply affected Heagy, influencing the themes of the new LP. Collaborating with Will Yip was emotionally significant for Heagy, who found solace after his cousin’s passing. Tracks like “Lost Signal,” “Dirty Mirror Selfie,” “Where Blue Light Blooms,” and “Wretched Trajectory” highlight the band’s genre-blending style and emotional depth. The album closes with the title track, “Feeling Not Found,” where Heagy’s lyrics reflect a newfound resolve and understanding, symbolizing the band’s journey and growth.
