Ashnikko is known for her more experimental, bold, and, at times, unsettling sounds when it comes to her tracks. She plays with a lot of electronic sounds mixed with punk-rock vibes. Ashnikko is very edgy and this edge would really enhance the spook-factor of any high-intense, slasher film. She has several songs that could be used but “Halloweenie V: The Moss King” has that slightly anxiety-inducing sound that would add to the blood-pumping, high stakes scenes that horror movies have.
This is one of their most iconic songs in the modern alternative scene because it feels like three songs in one and, at the time of its release, it was something that had never really been heard before. Not to that extent, at least. There are so many different elements that add to the spook-factor of the song starting with the darker tones of the song. There’s a layer of temptation that’s teased both with the lyrics and the drawn out layering of instrumentals. The middle portion of the song makes you feel like you’re floating but in the most haunting way. The last part is probably the least fitting for a horror film but depending on the scene, it could still apply.
This sounds like the type of song that would be played in the part of a horror movie where the rebellious teens are at some late-night party before all hell breaks loose. It actually has nothing to do with the band’s name, although that does help. It just genuinely fits into that specific scene that would really help build up to the spookier parts of the film to be able to start with a more alternative but feel-good song before all the horror begins.
I do NOT suggest listening to this if you’re someone with high anxiety because this song is panic-inducing. I say that so genuinely as a means to look out for people’s mental health. But, this song is stunning with a very deep meaning that screams female rage. Ethel may as well send flashing lights in a really disorienting setting every time someone plays it. This song is unsettling and haunting and fits well into the horror genre. Ethel is a musical genius.
Billie is an artist that isn’t afraid to play into more unique and edgy sounds while still falling under the pop genre which makes her universal to most people’s playlists. “NDA” feels like it has something to lose but also couldn’t care less. This song screams power.
