Maybe it’s the fact that I just finished Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, but Texas native Remy Reilly may have just written one of *the* songs of the summer to fit with that show’s soundtrack. With a breezy summer day feeling, Reilly captures the moment of realizing that it’s okay to keep your heart open (especially with those summer romances coming up *wink wink*).
Coming off of her 2022 EP release Avalanche, which was released last year, was a nod to coming-of-age movies spanning different genres of music. What Do Ya Know? fits seamlessly into this narrative, this time venturing into the pop-rock genre. For as young as Reilly is, her wisdom and storytelling are beyond her years, because even I have yet to come to terms with being nice to people that have wronged me in the past.
In a statement, she commented “I was annoyed that I still saw the good in people after they had done bad things, but then I realized it was a wonderful property to have. There are going to be bad people in your life, but you choose whether you change it and take it as a lesson. I never wanted to change my personality or light way of looking at people just because one person wasn’t kind to me.”
Remy is much nicer than me.
That being said, I’m fully prepared to add What Do Ya Know? into my summer rotation, and you should too. It’ll be a key part of your personal soundtrack for your storybook summer. Remy Reilly is a rising star, so get in on the ground floor while you can. You’ll be glad you did.
You can follow Remy on Instagram and listen wherever you stream your music!
